Biography: Jiang Tie Feng (1938) was born in Ningbo, China. He showed an interest in art as a child, and his mother encouraged his pursuits. He went on to study at the prestigious Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing learning from the master artist Huang Yong-yu. He graduated in 1964 at the beginning of the cultural revolution. The Chinese Government hired him to produce"Socialist Realism" propaganda, and one of his posters of a red-faced Chairman Mao became quite famous. The new regime would not allow for his artistic expressions, however, so he and two other artists, He Neng and Liu Shaohui, Jiang formed a school that became known as the "Yunnan School." In 1983, Jiang came to the US and began teaching art at the University of Southern California, in their cultural exchange program. His art was noticed by American galleries, and he became quite popular. His paintings are full of Buddhist and Chinese mythology. What most people saw, however, were his revolutions forms and colors, which broke from traditional Chinese painting. He has said "my work is my understanding of life." He eventually settled in California, and he has become known as the Father of the Yunnan School of Art. His work has appeared at many group and one man exhibitions, and is widely collected throughout the world.
